A Dhaka court has fixed November 8 for a charge-framing hearing in the murder case of Jagannath University student Jubayed Hossain, giving the defence a final chance to prepare.
Acting Judge Mazharul Islam of the Dhaka 20th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court set the date after defence lawyers sought more time, citing inadequate preparation and the absence of senior lawyers abroad.
Court bench assistant Mazedul Islam confirmed the development, adding that the hearing had already been deferred twice. All three accused are currently in jail and were produced before the court.
Jubayed, a member of the convening committee of the university’s Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal unit, was stabbed to death on October 19 last year while visiting his student’s residence in Armanitola, Old Dhaka, to provide private tuition.
His elder brother, Enayet Hossain Saikat, filed a murder case with Bangshal Police Station on October 21.
After nearly nine months of investigation, police submitted a charge sheet on June 30 against Jubayed’s student, Barjis Shabnam Barsha; her boyfriend, Md Mahir Rahman; and Mahir’s friend, Fardeen Ahmed Aylan.
Investigators reportedly identified a love triangle as the motive behind the killing.
