The International Crimes Tribunal has fixed November 17 for a hearing on framing formal charges against eight accused, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, in a crimes against humanity case over the killing of nine young men during an alleged anti-militancy operation in Dhaka’s Kallyanpur.

The International Crimes Tribunal-2 set the new date on Wednesday (October 28) following a time petition filed by the defence.

Former inspector general of police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Haque and former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Mia are in jail in connection with the case. The other six accused are absconding.

The absconding accused are former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former DMP additional commissioner Sheikh Mohammad Maruf Hasan, former Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit chief Md Monirul Islam, former DMP joint commissioner (Crime) Krishna Pada Roy and former joint commissioner (DB) Abdul Baten.

What happened at Jahaj Bari

According to the allegations, police conducted a raid at a building named Taj Manzil on Road No. 5 in Kallyanpur on the night of July 25, 2016, following the militant attack on the Holey Artisan Bakery in Gulshan. The building was locally known as Jahaj Bari because of its shape.

Nine young men were killed in the operation, named “Operation Storm-26”. One person named Hasan was arrested with bullet injuries, while another managed to flee.

Following the political changeover in 2024, allegations emerged that the operation had been staged under the pretext of an anti-militancy raid to kill the nine young men.

A case accusing the eight individuals of crimes against humanity was subsequently filed with the International Crimes Tribunal.

The tribunal will hear arguments on framing formal charges on November 17 before deciding on the next course of action.
