The Power Division has formed a high-level investigation committee to determine the cause of a major national grid failure that disrupted electricity supply in parts of the country on Tuesday.

The five-member committee, headed by Additional Secretary K M Ali Reza, has been tasked with identifying the cause of the disruption and recommending measures to prevent similar incidents.

According to an order issued by the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources on Wednesday, the committee has been asked to submit its report within five working days.

Earlier, Power Grid Bangladesh PLC formed a separate five-member committee, headed by Chief Engineer (Transmission-2) Syed Ebadullah Haider Ali, to investigate the incident and recommend measures to prevent future disruptions.

The power disruption occurred at around 12:45pm on Tuesday, affecting eastern Dhaka and parts of Chattogram.
Several power plants shut down following the failure, causing electricity supply to a large part of the country to be disrupted.

Power plants began restarting one by one after about two hours, allowing electricity supply to gradually recover. The situation returned to normal by night.

Power Grid Bangladesh formed its investigation committee on the same day to determine the actual cause of the failure. The Power Division has now launched a separate, high-level probe into the incident.

Bangladesh has experienced major national grid failures in the past.
