A mob attack on the Communist Party of Bangladesh’s (CPB) central office Mukti Bhaban, in the capital’s Purana Paltan area has triggered political tension.
The attack took place around 10:00pm on Monday, when a group of youths allegedly broke the office’s main gate and attempted to force their way inside, leaving several CPB members injured. The attackers reportedly accused the party of sheltering members of a banned organisation.
The incident followed the detention and subsequent release of Deepak Shil, a former president of the Bangladesh Chhatra Union. According to Paltan Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ariful Islam, some of Shil’s supporters celebrated his release by chanting “Joy Bangla”, prompting anger among a group of youths.
