A Dhaka court on Thursday ordered the seizure of the income tax files of Suchana Foundation over alleged corruption, fraud and suspicious transactions worth nearly Tk 931 crore. The court also ordered the seizure of the tax files of former Barguna-1 lawmaker Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu.
Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Shahjahan Kabir passed the orders on October 29 following separate applications filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
On September 2, the ACC filed a case against 35 people, including Saima Wazed Putul, daughter of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, several Suchana Foundation trustees, prominent businessmen and former National Board of Revenue (NBR) officials.
The case alleges that Tk 447.95 crore was embezzled through illegal tax exemptions and that the foundation was used for money laundering involving Tk 930.97 crore.
According to the ACC investigation, the foundation allegedly received illegal financial benefits through the abuse of tax-related powers. Investigators also alleged that it evaded Tk 99.04 lakh in income tax between the 2015–16 and 2024–25 tax years by using fabricated tax payment records.
The ACC further alleged that 14 bank accounts were opened in the foundation’s name to facilitate suspicious deposits and withdrawals linked to illegal financial benefits.
The court ordered the seizure of the tax files to facilitate scrutiny of financial records and the investigation into the alleged offences.
