Drivers block Dhaka-Sylhet highway over gas shortage

CNG-run auto-rickshaw and microbus drivers blocked the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj on Thursday, demanding a steady supply of compressed natural gas (CNG).

The blockade was staged in front of Al-Amin CNG filling station around noon, causing a traffic jam stretching about five kilometres on both sides of the station. Dhaka- and Sylhet-bound passengers suffered as a result.

Police and army personnel went to the spot and restored normal traffic after about two hours.

The protesting drivers alleged that they had been waiting at the filling station since morning but were denied gas supplies because of a power outage. They said they were forced to block the highway after waiting for hours without receiving gas.

CNG driver Shukkur Ali said Madhabpur has three CNG filling stations. Semco and Shosan stations remain closed from the 27th of each month, leaving Al-Amin as the only operational station and placing additional pressure on it.

He alleged that Al-Amin was also frequently kept closed for various reasons, causing hardship for drivers.

Microbus driver Shaheen said he had arrived at 7:00am to refuel but was still waiting. He said the drivers resorted to the blockade after being told that gas could not be supplied because of the power outage.

Al-Amin CNG filling station manager Manik Mia said the station's generator was out of order, leaving it unable to operate during the power outage.

He said the station could not supply gas without electricity.
