National Citizen Party (NCP) Senior Joint Member-Secretary Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan has accused children of MPs and ministers, whom he termed ‘nepokids’, of dominating state affairs and marginalising even veteran BNP members.
Speaking at an outreach campaign in Badda in the capital on Thursday he alleged that one such individual had shot dead Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal activist Shakil Islam, who participated in the July mass uprising.
The NCP will stage a mass demonstration on October 30 over deteriorating law and order, rising commodity and fuel prices, and the alleged politicisation of state institutions.
“Government tenders and contracting work are now controlled by these ‘nepokids’,” Asif Mahmud remarked, warning that the movement could target privileged elites, as seen in Nepal and Sri Lanka.
He accused the government of prioritising plunder over public welfare and urged marginalised BNP members to join the NCP’s street protests. He also called for implementation of the July Charter and greater government accountability.
Criticising the appointment of an unelected administrator to Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), he claimed the individual had previously been rejected by voters in Dhaka-15.
He also accused the DNCC and Dhaka South City Corporation administrators of using public funds and official logos for self-promotion.
