Netflix is facing mounting pressure to sustain business growth and retain viewers as competition intensifies in the streaming industry, with YouTube gaining ground through lower-cost content and creator-produced videos.

The challenge comes as viewing habits shift, raising questions about Netflix’s ability to keep audiences engaged while maintaining its investment in high-budget films and television series.

According to a Reuters report, Netflix was scheduled to release its third-quarter financial results on Tuesday, with investors looking for signs of how the company plans to sustain growth amid intensifying competition.

Netflix co-chief executive Ted Sarandos recently acknowledged that the company was not growing as quickly as he had expected. He has also identified live programming as a potential avenue for accelerating growth.

YouTube Emerges as a Major Competitor: Changing entertainment habits have become a significant challenge for Netflix. Alongside big-budget films and series, viewers are increasingly spending time watching relatively inexpensive videos produced by independent creators on platforms such as YouTube.

According to data from market research firm Nielsen, YouTube commands nearly twice as much total viewing time as Netflix in the United States, highlighting the growing competitive pressure on traditional streaming services.

Estimates from Jefferies show that the average monthly viewing time per Netflix subscriber fell from 66 hours in the first half of 2023 to 49 hours in the first half of this year, indicating a decline in engagement among its subscribers.

Subscriber Churn Rises in the United States: Citing data from market research firm Apptopia, Reuters reported that Netflix’s subscriber churn rate in the United States increased 16.6 per cent in the third quarter compared with the same period last year. The pace of increase was nearly twice that recorded in each of the previous three quarters. Downloads of the Netflix app in the United States and Canada also fell 20 per cent, according to the report. However, these indicators alone do not establish that Netflix is losing viewers across all markets.

Meanwhile, forecasts compiled by London-based data and analytics firm LSEG suggest that Netflix could record its slowest revenue growth in three years in the third quarter.

Analysts expect revenue to rise 11.8 per cent year-on-year to $12.87 billion, reflecting continued growth but at a slower pace.

Advertising and Live Sports Offer New Opportunities: Netflix is placing greater emphasis on advertising to diversify its revenue streams. According to Jefferies estimates, the company’s advertising revenue could reach $7.5 billion by 2029.

Live sports broadcasting is another part of its strategy. Netflix recently secured the rights to broadcast the 2030 FIFA World Cup in Spain and Andorra, giving the company an opportunity to attract new audiences and retain existing subscribers through major sporting events.

Netflix’s challenge is no longer limited to producing popular films and television series. It must also adapt to changing viewing habits, diversify its revenue sources and compete with platforms that offer a broad range of content at relatively low production costs.

The company’s third-quarter results and future strategy will offer further insight into how effectively it can maintain growth in an increasingly competitive streaming market.
