Bangladesh may experience six cold waves during December and January, with two to three of them potentially turning severe, according to a forecast by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).
The information was disclosed in a seasonal weather forecast issued by the BMD on Wednesday (November 4).
Meteorologist Md Mominul Islam said two to four low-pressure systems may form over the Bay of Bengal by January. Of these, one or two may intensify into cyclones.
During this period, both day and night temperatures may remain above normal.
The forecast also warned that moderate to dense fog may occur in some parts of the country, particularly over river basins, from late night to morning. Other areas may experience light to moderate fog.
Dense fog may narrow the gap between day and night temperatures, increasing the feeling of cold.
The BMD forecast further said that four to six mild to moderate cold waves may sweep across the country during the period, with two to three potentially intensifying into severe cold waves.
According to the BMD, temperatures may drop to 8-10 degrees Celsius during mild cold waves, 6-8 degrees during moderate cold waves and 4-6 degrees during severe cold waves.
