Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC has launched three new foreign currency accounts to expand savings and investment opportunities for non-resident Bangladeshis.
Mohammad Zahir Hussain, chairman of the bank and an executive director of Bangladesh Bank, inaugurated the accounts at Islami Bank Tower on Wednesday.
The newly introduced products are Mudaraba Non-Resident Convertible Taka (NRCTA) Savings Account, Al-Wadeeah NRCTA Current Account and Mudaraba NRCTA Term Deposit Account.
Speaking at the launch ceremony as the chief guest, Zahir Hussain said Islami Bank contributes around 17 per cent of the country's total remittance inflows and plays a significant role in economic development and the growth of foreign exchange reserves.
He said the new accounts would allow expatriate Bangladeshis to save and invest their foreign currency earnings while earning Shariah-compliant profits. Account holders will also be able to repatriate their deposits, along with profits, and operate their accounts through digital channels.
The initiative is expected to encourage remittances through formal banking channels, improve the financial security of expatriate Bangladeshis and strengthen the country's foreign exchange reserves.
The programme was chaired by the bank's Acting Managing Director Md Altaf Hossain. Additional Managing Director Dr M Kamal Uddin Jasim delivered the welcome address, while Md Moniruzzaman, head of the Offshore Banking Unit, presented an overview of the accounts.
Senior executives of the bank, heads of zones and branches, and foreign exchange and sub-branch in-charges attended the programme virtually.
