US Vice President JD Vance has identified the war with Iran and Washington’s relationship with Israel as two key issues behind the Republican Party’s losses in the midterm elections.
In a post on X on Wednesday, Vance said many voters who supported Donald Trump and him in 2024 switched to Democrats in 2026.
He cited four major concerns among voters: ending the war with Iran, addressing the cost of living, prioritising the “America First” policy and changing the US relationship with Israel.
Vance also said the Iran war contributed to the Republicans’ defeat, echoing Trump’s remarks that rising fuel prices amid the conflict had hurt the party.
Trump, however, continued to defend the decision to go to war.
Vance had reportedly opposed military action against Iran before the US and Israel launched the war on February 28. He has also called for US Middle East policy to prioritise American interests rather than those of Israel.
