Tlaib, Omar win fifth consecutive terms

Democratic Congresswomen Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar have secured their fifth consecutive victories in the US House of Representatives in Tuesday's midterm elections.

Tlaib defeated Republican challenger James D Hooper in Michigan's 12th Congressional District, while Omar retained Minnesota's 5th District by defeating Republican candidate John Nagel.

Tlaib represents Detroit and surrounding areas. She is the first Palestinian-American woman elected to Congress and has been vocal about Palestinian rights and US policy towards Israel.

Omar, a Somali-American refugee, has represented Minnesota's 5th District since 2019. She has consistently advocated for immigrant rights and progressive policies while facing repeated criticism from President Donald Trump.

Both lawmakers are prominent figures in the Democratic Party's progressive wing and have played key roles in debates on immigration, foreign policy and civil rights.

The midterm election results will determine the balance of power in the House, where a party needs at least 218 seats to secure a majority.
