French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot on Wednesday (November 4) welcomed the Democratic Party's victory in the United States midterm elections, characterizing the outcome as a positive development for democratic governance.
Addressing the French National Assembly, Barrot noted that the election outcome highlights the fundamental power of voters over external influences.
"This is further proof that in a democracy, the people write their own history and that no one, neither algorithms nor private interests, can do it for them," Barrot told lawmakers, while also describing the campaign period in the US as highly divisive and contentious.
The remarks followed Tuesday's midterm polls, where the Democratic Party secured majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
The political shift reverses previous narrow Republican majorities in both chambers of Congress, positioning Democrats to exercise significant legislative oversight and potentially stall key policy initiatives under the Trump administration.
