5 to die for triple murder

MANIKGANJ, Nov 5: A court has sentenced five people to death and eight others to life imprisonment for their involvement in a triple murder over a land dispute in Singair upazila of the district. Eight other accused were sentenced to different jail terms, while four were acquitted.

Manikganj District and Sessions Judge SKM Tofael Hasan delivered the verdict on Thursday at around 12:30pm after examining the evidence and recording the testimonies of eight witnesses.

The death row convicts are Ziar Uddin, Zahidul Islam, Abdur Rashid, Jasim and Siddik Mia. Those sentenced to life imprisonment are Zahir Uddin, Azizul, Ujjal, Samsul Haque, Salauddin, Majed Mia, Manan and Swapan. All of them are residents of Gobindhal village in Singair upazila.

According to court sources, the murders stemmed from a longstanding land dispute between Aziz Molla, son of Rahim Molla of Gobindhal Uttarpara, and his cousins Karim Molla and Tetul Molla.

On February 21, 2016, at around 7:00am, the accused allegedly lured Aziz Molla and two others to a house, where they were beaten and hacked to death.
