2 murdered in two districts

Two persons were murdered in separate incidents in Gopalganj and Jashore districts on Friday.

GOPALGANJ: A 77-year-old man died early Friday while undergoing treatment at Gopalganj Medical College Hospital after allegedly being beaten by members of a rival family over a land dispute in Satpar area of Gopalganj Sadar Upazila.

The victim, Mizanur Rahman, was reportedly attacked with sticks and rods on the afternoon of November 4 by members of the family of Shuvo Molla, son of local resident Monir Molla, who is allegedly involved in drug trafficking.

Rahman was initially admitted to Gopalganj Medical College Hospital before being referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated. He was brought back to Gopalganj on Thursday afternoon, where he died in the early hours of Friday.

Inspector Md Shafiul Alam of the Boultali police outpost confirmed the death, saying police were trying to arrest those accused in the attack. No formal complaint had been filed by the time of reporting. The accused are reportedly absconding.

JASHORE: A man allegedly murdered his wife over suspicions of extramarital affair before surrendering to police in Jashore early Friday.

The killing took place at around 5:30 am at the couple’s home in Shantala of Jashore Sadar Upazila. The victim was identified as Shahanaz Khatun, wife of Atiar Rahman.

Relatives said Atiar Rahman had divorced Shahanaz four months ago over similar suspicions. The couple reunited last week following mediation by their son, Raihan. However, Rahman allegedly killed her after his suspicions resurfaced.

Inspector (Investigation) of Kotwali Police Station Md Badruzzaman said Rahman went to the police station immediately after the killing, confessed to the crime and surrendered. Acting on his information, police recovered Shahanaz’s body from the scene.

Rahman is currently in police custody. The victim’s family is preparing to file a formal complaint, police said.
