Bangladesh fought back from a difficult position to secure a 30-run first-innings lead against West Indies, thanks to a magnificent unbeaten double century from Towhid Hridoy on the third day of the second Test at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Saturday.
Resuming at 88 for three, Bangladesh finished their first innings at 386 for nine in 111.5 overs, overturning West Indies' total of 356. The visitors reached seven without loss in four overs in their second innings before stumps, leaving them 23 runs behind.
Hridoy anchored the recovery with an extraordinary 242 not out from 359 deliveries, while Mushfiqur Rahim contributed 34 before falling to Jomel Warrican. The two added 73 runs for the fourth wicket after Bangladesh had lost three early wickets.
However, wickets continued to fall around Hridoy. Litton Das made eight, Mehidy Hasan Miraz scored 16, while Taijul Islam added 22 and Taskin Ahmed contributed 12. Hridoy remained at the crease as the lower order helped Bangladesh move beyond the visitors' total.
Shadman Islam, who injured his ankle while fielding on the previous day, was unable to bat.
West Indies had earlier posted 356, with Amir Jangoo scoring 133. Hasan Mahmud led Bangladesh's bowling effort with six wickets.
Bangladesh will now look to make early inroads into the West Indies second innings on the fourth morning and build on the advantage created by Hridoy's remarkable effort.
