CHATTOGRAM, Nov 7: The Chattogram City Corporation ( CCC ) will receive an amount of Taka 224 crore 70 lakh 53 thousand 937 annually as municipal tax for the 2025-2026 fiscal year from the Chattogram Port Authority ( CPA ).
Earlier, the CCC proposed an annual municipal tax of Tk 264 crore 35 lakh 92 thousand 868 and this was determined by both the organizations through a joint survey. Later, CPA agreed to pay only Tk 50 crore against the determined municipal tax.
When CPA did not comply, CPA appealed to the Divisional Commissioner’s Court and the final verdict of the appeal was given on Monday asking the CPA to pay the above-mentioned amount.
According to CCC sources, this verdict has put an end to the long-standing dispute between the CCC and the port on the municipal tax issue. At the same time, the CCC will receive the highest revenue from any single institution.
Senior officials of the CCC said that since the 1994-1995 fiscal year, the CPA has never paid the entire municipal tax proposed by the CCC.
Currently, after a long 30 years, the CCC administrator Dr. Shahadat Hossain’s initiative paved the way for the collection of almost the entire ( 85 percent ) of the municipal tax proposed by the CCC .
Dr. Shahadat Hossain said , although most of the city’s roads are built for vehicles carrying 6-10 tons, vehicles carrying goods from the port are moving with a load of 50-60 tons.
The city’s internal roads are rapidly being damaged due to the movement of thousands of trucks, lorries and other vehicles carrying goods to and from the port.
