More than 100 spectators may have lost their mobile phones while attending the filming of popular Bangladeshi television magazine show Ityadi in Kalai upazila of Joypurhat.
Police, however, detained one suspected member of a theft gang.
Kalai Police Station's Officer in-Charge (Investigation) Imayedul Zahedi confirmed the incident on Sunday (November 8) morning.
The detainee, identified as Golam Ratan, 47, is the son of Golam Rabbani of the Bhada area in Joypurhat Sadar upazila.
The filming took place on Saturday evening, from around 6PM to 9PM, at the college ground beside the historic Nandail Dighi in Kalai. Nearly 10,000 people from different parts of the district reportedly gathered at the venue from early morning to watch the recording of the popular programme, conceived, directed and presented by Hanif Sanket.
Despite an extensive security arrangement involving more than 250 police personnel, members of intelligence agencies, 50 Scouts and 100 local volunteers, thieves and pickpockets allegedly took advantage of the massive crowd.
Spectators reportedly had their mobile phones stolen from their pockets and bags during the recording. Many realised their phones were missing only after the programme ended.
Several victims subsequently went to Kalai Police Station and lodged verbal complaints. Local sources estimated that more than 100 phones might have been stolen, although the exact number has yet to be established.
The victims were expected to submit written complaints to the police on Sunday morning.
Zahedi said several spectators had reported mobile phone thefts after the event, adding that the number of stolen phones could exceed 50, based on the complaints received so far.
He also said police detained Golam Ratan at the event venue while he was allegedly caught in possession of stolen mobile phones and money.
Police have yet to establish the final number of stolen devices, while further investigation into the incident is underway.
