Operations across the country's largest industrial sector in Gazipur returned to normal on Sunday (November 8) as garment workers resumed their shifts peacefully following days of protests and road blockades.
Traffic flow along the major Dhaka-Tangail and Dhaka-Mymensingh highways has fully restored, with workers entering factories without impediment or panic across key hubs, including Konabari, Chandra, Palli Bidyut, Shafipur, Tongi, and Sreepur.
The industrial belt had witnessed violent demonstrations in late October and early November over demands for a minimum wage hike and additional benefits. Clashes between protesting workers and law enforcement led to production disruptions, prompting authorities to temporarily shut down over 50 factories. Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and additional police forces were subsequently deployed on November 2 and 4 to stabilize the area.
Calm was restored after the government-appointed Wage Board submitted recommendations for a revised salary structure. Factory owners and worker representatives reached an agreement on the proposed scale, which is scheduled to take effect in December and be disbursed in January 2027.
Gazipur Industrial Police Superintendent Amjad Hossain confirmed that all garment units have reopened and are functioning in a peaceful environment. He added that joint security personnel—comprising the Army, BGB, and Industrial Police—remain deployed at strategic locations to prevent further unrest.
