AL candidates sweep Comilla UP polls

COMILLA, Dec 30: The ruling Awami League (AL)-backed chairman candidates have won majority chairman posts in Thursday's union council elections in Laksam, Nangolkot, Daudkandi and Comilla Sadar Dakkhin upazilas of the district.
Elections were held in 15 union parishads (UPs); among those, eight unions are under Nangolkot Upazila, three under Laksam Upazila, three under Daudkandi Upazila and one under Comilla Sadar Dakkhin Upazila of the district were held peacefully on Thursday where all eight AL-backed candidates from Nangolkot Upazila, all three from Laksam Upazila, two out of three chairman candidates were elected chairmen in Daudkandi Upazila and the remaining one was elected as AL rebel candidate while lone chairman candidate in Bakoi North Union under Sadar Dakkhin Upazila was elected chairman from AL ticket. 
In Nangolkot Upazila, AL candidate Master Rafiqul Islam Majumder was elected chairman in Roykot North union bagging 9,047 votes while BNP candidate Idris Mia got 22,012 votes. AL Candidate Mojibur Rahman was elected chairman in Roykot South Union getting  7564 votes while BNP candidate Nazrul Islam got 1,481 votes.
In Jodda East Union, AL candidate Anwar Hossain Miazi was elected chairman and got 8,900 votes while BNP candidate Safiqur Rahman Chowdhury got 2,720 votes. AL candidate Masud Rana Bhuiyan elected chairman in Jodda West Union getting  9,144 votes while BNP candidate Shahjahan Majumder got 1,869 votes.
AL candidate NKN Sirajul Alam was elected chairman in Bat Tali Union getting t 6,944 votes while BNP candidate Golam Mowla bagged  1,175 votes. AL candidate Abul Kalam Bhuiyan was elected chairman in Doulkhar Union bagging 9,925 votes while BNP candidate Mosharraf Hossain got 2,179 votes.
In Adra North Union, AL candidate Tajul Islam was elected chairman with 8,965 votes while BNP candidate Mahbuba Akhter got 1,045 votes. AL candidate Abdul Wahab was elected chairman in Adra South union with 6,929 votes while BNP candidate Moinuddin got 2,136 votes.
In Laksam Upazila, AL candidate Shahidul Islam Shahin was elected chairman in Mudaffargonj North Union with 8,216 votes while BNP candidate Shah Alam got 2,447 votes. AL candidate Abdur Rashid was elected chairman in Mudaffargonj South Union with 7,100 votes while BNP candidate Abul Bashar got 1,754 votes.
In Bakoi South Union, AL candidate Abdul Awal was elected chairman with 7,060 votes while BNP candidate Anwar Hossain got 2,943 votes.
In Daudkani Upazila, AL candidate Monir Hossain Talukder was elected chairman in Barpara union with 5,017 votes while BNP candidate Md. Alauddin got 5,009 votes. AL candidate Md. Mamunur Rashid was elected chairman in Eliotgonj South Union with 8,195 votes while BNP candidate Anwar Hossain got 4,916 votes. In Doulatpur union of the upazila, AL rebel candidate Md. Mohin Uddin was elected chairman with 3,979 votes while BNP candidate Md. Safiqul Islam got 2,944 votes.
In Bakoi North union in Sadar Dakkhin upazila, AL candidate Ayub Ali was elected chairman with 5,748 votes while AL rebel Mizanur Rahman got 1,198 votes, Jamaat-minded candidate Wahab Mollah got 776 votes and BNP candidate Delwar Hossain got 662 votes. 
It is mentioned here that all BNP chairman candidates in Laksham Upazila boycotted the election after holding a press conference at 11am on Thursday.
The press conference was held at the residence of Abul Kalam, president of Laksam upazila BNP.
Upazila BNP Vice-President Rafiqul Islam read out the written statement in the press conference. In the written statement, he said that for the bombing from midnight, agents did not enter polling centres in three unions.
No action was taken even after repeated complaint was given to the law-enforcing agencies. BNP candidate of Mudaffarganj North Union Shah Alam complained that on Wednesday night, Laksham Police Station, Mir Hossain arrested his office staff and Ahsan Ullah from my house. Senior Joint Secretary Kazi Abdur Rashid, Vice-Chairman Anwar Hossain, Upazila BNP leader Mohammad Sirajul Islam and Monir Ahmed were present at the press conference.
District Election Officer Khorshed Alam said, he got complaints, and action will be taken in this regard.
