
A Pro-Awami League panel, ‘Bangabandhur Adarsha O Muktijuddher Chetonay Biswashi Progotishil Jote’of Jahangirnagar University (JU) swept the registered graduates' representative election to the university Senate bagging 18 posts out of 25 on 31 December 2017.
On the other hand, the BNP-backed panel, titled ‘Swadhinota, Sarbovoumotto, Bohudolio Gonotontro O Bangladeshi Jatiotabadey Biswashi Panel’ panel got only 6 posts in the poll.
Only one member was elected from another AL panel, tilted ‘Bangabondhur Adarsho O Muktijuddher Chetonay Biswashi Progotishil Graduate Mancha’.
The elected registered graduate representatives are KH. Mahid Uddin, Md. Kaikobad Hossain, Shariff Enamul Kabir, Dr. Mohammad Alamgir Kabir Mohammad Sohel Parvez, Ashish Kumar Majumder, Shamima Sultana, Krishna Gayen, Prithila Nazeen Nilima, Mahabbat Hossain Khan, Sheikh Monowar Hossain, Md. Motaher Hossain, Abul Kalam Azad, Mohammad Mehedi Zamil, Md. Ebaidullah Talukder, Induprova Das, Md. Masudur Rahman, Md. Anowar Hossain Mirdha, Shihab Uddin Khan, Dr. Mohammad Nazrul Islam, Dr. Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan, Shamima Sultana, Md. Shamsul Alam, Sabina Yesmin and Md. Abdul Mannan Chowdhury.
JU Treasurer Professor Md. Sheikh Monzurul Huq declared the election result at 4:45am (night) on Sunday.
Earlier, the voting to elect 25 representatives of the registered graduates to the JU senate ended peacefully at 115 booths on the campus amid festivity on Saturday.
On Saturday morning, the wining panel ‘Bangabandhur Adarsha O Muktijuddher Chetonay Biswashi Progotishil Jote’ placed floral wreath at the Bangbandhu’s Portrait at Dhanmondi.
Later they brought out a victory procession on the campus that paraded the main roads of the campus.
On Sunday, 3635 voters among 4373 cast their votes in the election, which is 83 percent of the total voters. A total of 1962 voters cast their votes at New Arts building while 1673 voters cast their votes at Social Science building centre.
Though pro-BNP candidates participated united in this election, AL-backed candidates became divided into two camps.
Former JU VC Professor Shariff Enamul Kabir led the under the banner ‘Bangabandhur Adarsha O Muktijuddher Chetonay Biswashi Progotishil Jote’.
On the other hand, another former VC Professor MA Matin led another panel of registered graduates titled ‘Bangabondhur Adarsho O Muktijuddher Chetonay Biswashi Progotishil Graduate Mancha’ which have been formed comprising former JU unit BCL leaders.
However, pro-BNP panel under the banner ‘Sadhinota, Sarbovoumotto, Bohudolio Gonotontro O Bangladeshi Jatiotabadey Biswashi Panel’ took part in the election all together.
JU professor Shamsul Alam Selim led this panel while the former VC Professor Mustahidur Rahman is working as the advisor of the panel.
