Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday called upon the countrymen to build a ‘Golden Bengal’ free from hunger, poverty, illiteracy and communalism as dreamt by the greatest Bangalee of all time, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

She greeted the countrymen on the eve of the New Year 2018 in English calendar.

“The outgoing 2017 was a glorious year in the history of the Bangalee nation . . . let the new year bring in all our lives untainted happiness, peace and prosperity,” she said in a message issued on the occasion of New year.
The premier said Bangladesh witnessed glorious success in 2017 in areas of social development, maintaining constitutional and democratic continuation and upholding the spirit of the Liberation War.

It was a year of success in both domestic and international arena, she said.

The Prime Minister said, “Bangladesh has achieved lower middle-income status. The country has achieved one of the top positions in economic indicators.” Bangladesh is a role model of development in the world, she added.
Sheikh Hasina said the annual growth rate of GDP (gross domestic product) hit record at 7.28 percent in the outgoing year when the per-capita income surged to $1610.

She said reserves crossed 33 billion US dollar while the country drew increased foreign and domestic investments.
She said the government established around 18,000 community clinics and local health service centres across the country aimed at reaching healthcare service to doorsteps.

The Prime Minister said the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has recognised the historic 7th March Speech of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, as part of world’s documentary heritage.

“This is a great achievement of Bangali nation,” she added.

“Let’s build a ‘Golden Bengal’ free from hunger, poverty, illiteracy and communalism as dreamt by the greatest Bangalee of all time, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman,” she added.
