At least 8 students and 3 teachers were injured during a clash between students of two departments of the Rajshahi University following a cricket match between them on Sunday noon.

The injured teachers were identified as Associate Professor Mizanur Rahman, Assistant Professor Abdullah Al Maruf and Lecturer Jihad Ahmed of Geography and Environment Studies (GES) department.

GES students Alamgir, Shanto, Kibria, Tareq and Ashikur, and Finance department students Mehedi Hasan, Maruf and Ershadur Rahman Rifat also were injured. Most of them were taken to medical centre for primary treatment.

Witnesses said the semi-final match of the ‘Inter-Department Cricket Tournament-2017’ was being held between GES and Finance department at RU stadium on Sunday noon.

After GES won the match, both the team players and supporters hurled abusive words to each other which led to a clash between two groups of students, and at one stage, Finance student Ershadur Rahman Rifat beat up some of the students of GES.

As the teachers came forward to stop the clash, the Finance students beat the teachers also, and the students of two departments locked in a clash. RU proctorial body’s member took the situation under control after reaching the spot.

Injured students of GES alleged that the Finance students attacked first on them while they were leaving the stadium after the match, especially Ershadur Rahman beat their fellows first and their teachers also received injury during the clash.

Denying the allegation, Ershadur said that the students of GES hurled abusive words to them during the match. After the match, while Finance students went to talk to them, they beat Finance students first and the clash ensued, he claimed.

RU Proctor Prof Lutfor Rahman said, “I heard the matter after the incident and necessary steps would be taken after talking with the students of both the departments as well as teachers, and also the game committee.”
