KUSHTIA, Feb 6: The local farmers are happy over massive mango flowering amid favourable weather with a hope of bumper yield of mango this season in the district.
With the advent of the spring at the eve of departure of the winter, mango blooming has been continuing amid favourable and sunny weather that helped better flowering everywhere.
Sources at the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) in Kushtia said over 80 per cent mango trees have already been bloomed massively as the process still continues.
Horticulture Specialist of the DAE Dr. M. Sahabuddin said commercial mango cultivation has become popular as thousands of farmers have achieved self-reliance through farming the fruit in recent years.
The farmers have mostly been cultivating high-yielding varieties like Bombay, Langra, Fazli, Himsagor and Madrazi on more lands every year following repeated bumper production and lucrative prices.
Horticulture Specialist of the DAE Lotfur Rahman suggested the farmers to spray 80 per cent Sulphur on mango tress if mite attack is found following rise in temperature during fruit formation stage after budding from mid-March.
Besides, he suggested for spraying 'Mentozeb' or 'Propikonazole' as per recommended dose to prevent powdery nose mildew or anthrax, which might attack the young leaves, blooming flower twigs and buds following rise in temperature amid cloudy sky.
While visiting a huge mango orchard of Rahim Mia at Maligram Village under Khoksa Upazila here on Monday, this correspondent observed excellent flowering in almost all the mango trees there.
While talking to The Daily Observer, mango growers Monirul Islam, Khalilur Rahman, Shukur Ali, Rustam Ali and Kartik Biswas said they are expecting bumper mango yield this time like the previous seasons. They also expressed their happiness over excellent mango flowering and hoped to earn better profits this year.
District Agriculture Officer Shamsur Rahman predicted bumper mango production this season if the weather remains favourable till June next.
