KUSHTIA, Feb 22: Bheramara College, an old and traditional educational institution in Bheramara Upazila of the district, has been deprived of nationalisation for long though it has required criteria.
Established in 1965, it is one of the renowned, oldest and biggest private colleges in the country's south-western region.
Situated on 10.41 acres of land at the heart of Bheramara town, Bheramara College has one one-storied building, three two-storied buildings and one four-storied building.
There is a boundary wall surrounding the college which protects the institution properly.
The college have a rich central library, seven seminar libraries, science laboratory and a big playground. Every room and the total college campus is under CCTV.
The college have honours courses on seven subjects and five master's level courses with 71 teachers and about 4,500 students, and of them, about 2,000 are female students.
Bheramara College has been maintaining top position in the upazila in HSC, HSC (BM), Degree (Pass), and Degree (Honours) examinations.
Many students of the college get chance in BUET, medical colleges and public universities every year and many of them are now in important positions, both nationally and internationally.
Bheramara College has fame in the field of co-curricular activities. Debate competition, cultural competition and annual spots are held here regularly. The students of this college become champion in upazila, district, division and national level programmes almost every year.
There was a government instruction that a standard high school and a standard college at upazila level would be nationalised if the upazila has no government school and government college.
As per the instruction, deputy director of Secondary and Higher Secondary Department asked for the list of standard school and standard college.
In response to the notice, the district education officer sent the name of Bheramara College to the department.
Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu (MP) gave DO letter in this connection.
According to the proposal, the Education Ministry prepared a list of 85 colleges where the name of the Bheramara College was in the serial No. 14.
But on October 20, 2016 the Education Ministry published a list of 23 colleges for nationalisation on its website where the name of Bheramara Mahila College was mentioned excluding the Bheramara College.
The exclusion of Bheramra College shocked the students, teachers, guardians, employees and the common people of this zone.
Established in 1994, Bheramara Mahila College has only about 700 students, and is lagging behind the Bheramara College regarding all matters.
If Bheramara College is deprived of nationalisation, the people of zone will be deprived of their constitutional rights forever.
Local people hope that the government can give educational facilities to the maximum people by nationalising the Bheramara College.
A writ petition has been submitted with High Court Division of Supreme Court seeking nationalisation of Bheramara College instead of Bheramara Mahila College.
People in the upazila think that the traditional Bheramara College fulfils all the criteria for being nationalised.
They called on the concerned authorities to take necessary steps to bring the Bheramara College under nationalization, taking into consideration the hopes and aspirations of local people.
