RAJSHAHI, Mar 24: Due to random dumping of garbage across the city, the mosquitoes are increasing rapidly, said sources concerned.
Though the city was declared as pure air city, it is now full of dirt and garbage. Most of the ponds, drains, and sewers are now filled with garbage. As a result, mosquitoes are being born randomly, increasing the city people's irritation.
Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) is using 'Bottle Cannon' to kill mosquitoes, which is coming of no use. RCC officials said they have taken all necessary steps in this connection.
It was found that despite having adequate budget, there is a lack of efficiency and action plan in the RCC. On the other hand, mosquitoes are being born in the low-lying areas of the city due to accumulation of rubbish in drains, ponds and small canals. However, RCC is spraying kerosene and diesel to kill mosquito larvae. But, still the mosquitoes are not decreasing.
Garbage deposits were found at different areas of the city including Shiroil Bastuharapara, Tikapara, Chhotabangram, Shalbagan, Raninagar, Dingadoba, Hargrambazar, Talaimari, Rajshahi University, Bhadra, Meherchandi, Kazihata Ghospara, Guripara, Munsidanga and Sapura. Mosquitoes are born in the dirty places.
Nayeb Ali, of Shiroil Bastuharapara area said, "The only pond of this area has gradually turned into a garbage pit. It now seems that there was no pond. Mosquitoes are being born in great numbers here."
Tayeb Uddin, of Chhotabangram area said, "A local pond has been filled with water hyacinths where mosquitoes are being born. Local people cannot sleep due to mosquito menace. But, the RCC is not taking any effective measures."
RCC Mayor Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul, denying the allegation, said, "All the drains are kept clean in the city. Medicine is being sprayed regularly to destroy mosquito breeding places. As a result, there is no scope for mosquitoes to increase in the city."
He also hoped that RCC measures will remove the mosquito menace.
