TANGAIL, May 11: The 20-foot bridge located on Mamudnagar Post Kamari road in Nagarpur Upazila of the district is coming of no use to people. Due to lack of earth on the bridge's connecting roads, people of four villages in the upazila are getting no benefit from the bridge in both dry and rainy seasons. Sources said contractor Md Zillur Rahman constructed the bridge near one Farid Sikder's house under a project of Disaster Management Department at Tk 15,91,769.28 in 2015-16 fiscal year. Locals alleged that the construction farm withdrew their final bill including the security money without constructing the connecting road. Some local people Jamiruddin and Solaiman Sikdar said this is the only road to connect people with the upazila town. Besides, hundreds of students go to their respective educational institutions by the road. Though it is possible to go through alternative way in dry season, the sufferings double in rainy season. As the people of the areas depend on agriculture for livelihood, they have to use the road for transporting their products to different markets. But, due to the deplorable condition of the bridge, they are facing setback as they have to pay extra for transporting the products. While contacted, local Union Parishad Chairman Mohammad Anwar Hossain said, "The bridge is coming of no use to the locals. We informed the authority concerned in this connection several times. If we get new allocation, the bridge's connecting roads will be completed." Upazila Project Implementation Officer (UPIO) Begum Shahin said, "The former UPIO started the project. I have already informed about completing the connecting roads. Necessary fund will be allocated as early as possible." Contractor Abdul Khaleq said after constructing the bridge, earth was filled on its both sides, but rain water washed away the earth.
