RAJSHAHI, Aug 30: Different recreation centres on Padma riverbank are the only places for city people to pass leisure time. But, due to lack of renovation for long, the places are in sorry state. Meanwhile, the competition to grab the riverbank areas is going on unabated. Many illegal establishments have been built on the bank. The area is losing attraction for random dumping of garbage, illegal encroachment and lack of maintenance. Former mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) AHM Khairuzzaman Liton turned the Padma riverbank into a recreation spot taking different steps. Considering the people's recreation, beautification works were done at Panchaboty Swashan Ghat, Lalon Shah Park, Padma Garden and TI Dam areas. But, the areas have lost much attraction in last five years. While visiting the areas, many illegal establishments were found on the Padma bank. People are living in many illegal tin-shed houses. Cattle farms were built near Lalon Shah Mukto Manch from where the smell of cow dung and other garbage is coming out. Besides, garbage was found on viewer's resting spot. Many illegal restaurants were built on the riverbank. Local people alleged that though the local influential people and political leaders are directly involved in the grabbing, the RCC is not taking any step. Unsocial works happen in the tin-shed huts. Crossing the area during night is risky. A visitor Shafiqul Islam said the recreation spots on the Padma Riverbank need immediate repair. Due to lack of cleanliness, the areas have become safe breeding ground for mosquitoes. Local people alleged that RCC has leased the riverbank. In this connection, RCC Chief Engineer Ashraful Haque said they leased some areas considering the visitors' convenience. While asked about freeing the areas, he said that RCC has continued attempts to recover the areas from grabbing. But, nothing can be thought before the new mayor takes in office.
