SIRAJGANJ, Oct 6: Due to more profit with low cost, the fish farming in cages is increasing in the district.
Many unemployed people are getting interested in this type of cultivation as they are getting huge profit from it. They are using open water bodies including Fuljor, Karatoa, Hurasagar and Boral rivers for cultivating fish in cages.
They don't have to lease rivers like ponds. They only have to spend for installing cages.
The fish farmers said if they get government help, they will be able to expand this method of fish cultivation.
Fazlul Haque of Charghatina Village in Ullahpara Upazila, who achieved success in fish cultivation using this method, said, "I was passing my days amid hardship for long. With the encouragement of one, I started fish farming in cages in the Karatoa River from 2015. First, I set up 20 cages. Now, I'm cultivating monosex tilapia fish in 40 cages. I have two workers in my farm. After meeting all costs, I earn profit worth about Taka 3 lakh annually."
Farmer Jahangir Alam of Charsatbaria Village in the upazila said, "Seeing Fazlul Haque's success, I started cultivating fish in this way in 2017. Now, I have 32 cages in the Karatoa River. I had to spend about Taka 5.5 lakh in this connection. I did not make much profit primarily but now I'm profiting much. I will set up five more cages this year. If the government provides us help, many people will be interested to it."
Another farmer Radharani of Bhuiyagati area in Raiganj Upazila said many people are getting success cultivating fish in this way. A samity has been formed with 20 women of the area.
Acting District Fisheries Officer Md Mozammel Haque said the fish farming in this method started along with 30 cages in 2015 but now it is going on in 500 cages. From this, at least 600 beneficiaries are getting various facilities. About 1,000 metric tons of fish are being produced annually from 500 cages. In the meantime, 80 farmers have been trained on cultivating fish in cages, while 50 cages have been installed with government fund.
