
LAXMIPUR, Dec 3: Today is Laxmipur freedom day. On December 4 in 1971, freedom fighters freed the district from the clutches of Pakistani occupation forces.
District Liberation War unit sources said the freedom fighters conducted 29 expeditions including 17 face-to-face battles in nine months of the war. In these expeditions and battles, at least 35 freedom fighters including Syed Abdul Halim Basu, Mansur Ahmed, Abu Sayed, Abul Khayer, Nazrul Islam, Joynal Abedin, Atik, Mostafizur Rahman, and Ali Ahmed were martyred.
Besides, the Pakistani forces and their local collaborators killed many unarmed people.
On December 4, 1971, more than 150 freedom fighters, led by late Rafiqul Haider Chowdhury and late Subeder Abdul Matin attacked on different enemy camps and freed the district. Later, they hoisted the flag of independent Bangladesh.
Shahjahan, brother of a martyr Shahid Ali Azam of Dalal Bazaar, demanded immediate trial of all war criminals.
Former Deputy Commander of District Muktijoddha Sangsad Nuruzzaman Master thanked the current for initiating the trial of the war criminals.
Meanwhile, various organisations chalked out different programmes to mark the day.
