Police detained five people in connection with rape of a mentally challenged girl in Paba upazila of Rajshahi early Wednesday.
Detainees Asadul, 25, Dukhu, 35, Bariul, 33, Sajib, 24, and Sakim, 26, are residents of Durgapur village in Bholahat upazila of Chapainawabganj. They work as shepherds in smuggling cattle from India along Paba upazila border.
The incident took place in Berapara village under Haripur union in the upazila .
Local union parishad member Saidur Rahman Badol said the five people brought cattle for Abdul Bari of the village and stayed in his house at night. Among them, Asadul violated a mentally challenged girl of the village early hours.
Local people sensed the matter as the girl was screaming in pain. They caught the five people and handed over to police.
The victim's cousin lodged a case, accusing Asadul as main culprit and the four others as associates, with Damkura Police Station, said the police station officer in-charge Mazharul Islam.
Later, they were shown arrested in the case and sent to jail following a court order, the OC said.
However, the victim was sent to Rajshahi Medical Hospital for medical tests.
