Bangladesh is embarking on a bold journey towards environmental sustainability, with ambitious targets set to expand tree coverage and increase forest conservation efforts. Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Minister, announced the governments commitment to enhance the countrys green cover, aligning with global objectives and national priorities.
With a goal to expand tree coverage from 22.37 percent to 25 percent of the total land area by 2030, and increase forest coverage from 14.1 percent to 16 percent, Bangladesh demonstrates its dedication to combatting desertification, land degradation, and drought. The National Action Program for Combating Desertification, Land Degradation, and Drought, coupled with extensive tree planting initiatives, underscores the governments proactive approach to preserving forests, biodiversity, and wildlife.
Over the years, significant strides have been made in afforestation efforts, with approximately 217,402 hectares of block plantations and 30,252 km of strip gardens established, and over 112 million seedlings distributed and planted. Social forestry programs have empowered communities, with 160,699 beneficiaries receiving dividends worth Tk 32.695 billion. Integrated efforts to reclaim encroached forest lands have resulted in the recovery of about 30,000 acres of forest land nationwide, showcasing the effectiveness of collaborative conservation strategies.
Bangladeshs commitment to achieving Land Degradation Neutrality by 2030, in alignment with the UNs Sustainable Development Goal 15 and decisions of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, underscores its proactive stance on environmental stewardship. A national roadmap for addressing land degradation from 2021 to 2041 reflects long-term planning and a holistic approach to sustainable land management.
In the current monsoon season, the government plans to plant 83.33 million seedlings nationwide, further bolstering efforts to enhance green cover and combat climate change. A national forest survey is underway to assess tree cover and carbon content, providing crucial data for informed decision-making.
The legacy of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahmans vision is evident in Bangladeshs coastal afforestation initiatives, with approximately 89,853 hectares of green belt created along the coastline since 2009. These efforts not only mitigate the impacts of climate change but also honor the visionary leadership that laid the foundation for environmental conservation in Bangladesh.
On World Environment Day, Bangladesh reaffirms its commitment to environmental protection and restoration. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasinas inauguration of the National Tree Planting Campaign symbolizes national unity and collective action towards a greener future. The distribution of prestigious awards and recognition to beneficiaries of social forestry highlights the importance of individual and community contributions to environmental conservation.
Through extensive awareness campaigns, media outreach, and community engagement initiatives, Bangladesh strives to foster a culture of environmental responsibility and stewardship. By involving local communities in conservation efforts and implementing strategic management plans, Bangladesh aims to safeguard its natural heritage for future generations.
As Bangladesh celebrates World Environment Day and continues its journey towards a sustainable future, it serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for global efforts to address environmental challenges and build a resilient planet for all.
