Nayan's inspiring rise as a beauty entrepreneur

Nayan's entrepreneurial journey is a striking testament to perseverance, transforming adversity into opportunity and building a flourishing beauty business in Bangladesh. 

Defying societal prejudice, she earned recognition for her artistry, creating a parlor that thrives on talent and determination. 

Nayan, a resilient entrepreneur from the Hijra community of Bangladesh, is an inspiring example of perseverance, determination, and the power of breaking societal barriers. 

The path to success for Nayan, like many in the Hijra community, was fraught with prejudice, discrimination, and adversity.
 
Recalling her early days, Nayan shared how people in her community and society at large treated her with disdain, often passing hurtful comments and bullying her. 

Women working in local parlors would discourage customers from going to Nayan, spreading harmful rumors about her, and creating an environment of exclusion. However, these challenges didn't deter her.

"I think if a person's work is good, if her service is good, it doesn't matter what community she comes from," Nayan reflected. 

Her passion for make-up artistry, fueled by a desire to prove her worth through work, eventually helped her carve a niche in the beauty industry.

In a community where familial support for Hijra individuals is often scarce, Nayan's journey stood out. While her father initially did not support her, the backing from her mother and brothers gave her the strength to continue pursuing her dream. 

"My mother and two brothers were very supportive. Dad was not supportive at first, but later when he heard people appreciating my work, from then on he also supported me."

Nayan's determination led her to Dubai, where she danced in bars to earn money to fund her dream. Upon returning to Bangladesh, she opened a small-scale parlor with financial help from her mother and uncle. Despite initial setbacks - customers leaving after seeing her - Nayan gradually gained their trust through her exceptional work and professionalism.
Today, Nayan's beauty parlor is thriving, with three employees, one of whom belongs to the Hijra community. Her parlor's growth symbolizes her personal success and her commitment to providing opportunities for others in her community. Nayan's dream is to expand further and establish a beauty parlor entirely staffed by Hijra individuals, contributing to their financial independence and self-reliance.

She believes that providing employment opportunities is the key to preventing criminal activity within marginalized communities. "They will not engage in criminal activities if employed. Who does not want to live a respectable life?" Nayan asked, emphasizing the power of economic empowerment in transforming lives.

Actress, television presenter, and Third Gender Rights advocate Alisha Pradhan at the same breath asserts that individuals from marginalized gender communities should receive full scholarships and communication training to facilitate their integration into mainstream society.

This vision aligns with SDG 1 (No Poverty) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth). Nayan's success story is also a testament to the importance of gender equality and empowerment, directly contributing to SDG 5 (Gender Equality). By rising above the societal stigma that often surrounds members of the Hijra community, particularly in traditional business sectors, Nayan proves that talent and dedication know no gender or societal boundaries. Her efforts to employ and train other Hijra individuals showcase how inclusive workplaces can challenge long-standing gender norms and provide pathways for others to achieve equality and dignity. Her journey highlights her contribution to SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) too. As a Hijra entrepreneur, she has fought against entrenched societal discrimination and proved that members of marginalized communities can succeed with proper support and opportunity. By creating employment opportunities within her business for people from her community, Nayan is helping to level the playing field and reduce social and economic inequalities.

Pradhan emphasized, "Many within this community possess incredible talent and creativity, but they require counseling to harness their potential. I firmly believe they can contribute even more than others because they face greater challenges and have much to prove."

One of the pivotal moments in Nayan's story was when she applied for support from Bandhu Social Welfare Society (Bandhu), an organization dedicated to the empowerment of marginalized genders in Bangladesh. After hearing about her struggles, the organization provided crucial financial assistance, allowing Nayan to purchase essential equipment such as air conditioning units and hydrofacial machines. This support gave a significant boost to her business, enabling it to grow further.

Nayan expressed her deep gratitude towards Bandhu, acknowledging how their assistance helped her dream flourish. "I am very grateful to Bandhu as they extended their hands to me to flourish my business," she said.

By aligning her work with the goals of economic empowerment, gender equality, and reducing inequalities, Nayan is contributing to a more inclusive and equitable future for all. Through her entrepreneurial success, she demonstrates the power of financial independence in overcoming social and economic challenges.

Highlighting the journey of figures like Nayan, Pradhan added, "People like Nayan are not only establishing their own success stories but also setting powerful examples for their community. They show that a dignified life is possible, beyond the traditional roles of begging, dancing, or other demeaning tasks."
