A Jhalakathi court has sent former Member of Parliament (MP) for the Jhalakathi-1 constituency Shahjahan Omar to jail in a case filed over vandalising Kathalia unit BNP office in the district on December 4, 2023.

Jhalakathi Senior Judicial Magistrate Afroza Binte Shahid passed the order on Thursday after rejecting his bail petition.

Earlier in the day, some unidentified miscreants vandalised a vehicle carrying Shahjahan when he tried to enter ancestral home in Rajapur upazila of the Jhalakathi-1 constituency and assaulted him physically.

Later, Shahjahan went to Rajapur police station at around 10AM on Thursday to file a complaint but some alleged BNP activists surrounded the police station.

Muhitul Islam, additional superintendent of Jhalakathi Police, said Kathalia upazila unit BNP general secretary Akhter Hossain Nizam Mirbahar as a plaintiff filed a case on Wednesday (November 20) against nine people, including Shahjahan Omar, on charges of vandalising Kathalia unit BNP office on December 4, 2023.

Police arrested Shahjahan in this case, he added.

Some agitated BNP leaders and activists reportedly gathered on the court premises following the arrest of Shahjahan and staged demonstration. They also threw shoes and eggs at the former MP when he was being moved to the court.

Earlier, on Wednesday (November 20) night, unidentified miscreants reportedly attacked and vandalised the former lawmakers residence in Godownghat area in Jhalakathi Sadar upazila.

After hearing the news, Shahjahan was going to his home on Thursday morning from Barishal and came under attack by the miscreants.

Shahjahan Omar, former BNP Vice Chairman of BNP, left the party and joined Awami League. In the 12th national parliamentary elections, he submitted his nomination paper as an AL candidate for Jhalakathi-1 constituency that covers Rajapur and Kathalia.

After the fall of AL-led government on August 5, Shahjahan went into hiding.
