BNP National Executive Committee vice chairman and former Minister of Home Affairs Altaf Hossain Chowdhury urged India to refrain from actions that could harm the sovereignty of Bangladesh and strain bilateral relations, stating that the vision of 'Akhand Bharat' will remain an unfulfilled dream.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday at his residence in Patuakhali, Chowdhury criticized Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent statement, which he claimed undermined Bangladesh's independence. He called for a relationship between the two countries based on mutual respect and equality, saying, "We seek friendship with India, but it must be grounded on equal terms."

Chowdhury further elaborated on his concerns about India's current policies, stating that while Bangladesh has no enmity with India, the Modi administration's emphasis on Hindutva ideology has adversely affected regional ties. He noted that the late President Ziaur Rahman had strengthened South Asian relations by initiating SAARC but expressed disappointment that such unity has deteriorated under the present Indian government.

Reflecting on his tenure as Home Minister, Chowdhury highlighted the formation of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) as a notable achievement. However, he criticized Awami League government for allegedly turning the force into what he described as a "killer squad." Supporting the BNP's recent proposal to disband the RAB, he argued that its misuse has marred its reputation.

The BNP leader also addressed the state of democracy in Bangladesh, claiming that the ruling Awami League has left a legacy of undermining democratic values. "Restoring democracy and ensuring a fair, transparent, and impartial national election are our primary objectives," he declared.

Chowdhury expressed optimism about the current advisory council overseeing the interim government, praising its members as educated, capable, and experienced individuals. He voiced confidence that the council would facilitate a credible election within a reasonable timeframe.

He also spoke in support of Tarique Rahman, asserting that alleged conspiracies against the BNP leader have failed and that the people of Bangladesh eagerly await his leadership. "Under Tarique Rahman's guidance, Bangladesh will march towards prosperity," he said.

Several senior BNP leaders, including district committee members, lawyers, and activists, attended the press conference, underscoring the partys united stance on these issues.
