Police rescue 66 Rohingyas, arrest 5 human traffickers from Teknaf

COX'S BAZAR, Dec 29:  Police have foiled an attempt to traffic 66 Rohingyas to Malaysia by sea and detained five members of a human trafficking ring.

The arrested five traffickers were Md Rashed, 25, of Teknaf Municipality, Saleh Ahmed,35 and his brother Nurul Kabir,27, of Baharchara Union, Syed Alam,24 of Baharchara Union and Kamrul Islam alias Md. Shipon,32 of Sandwip Upazila, said Officer In-Charge of Teknaf Police Station Mohammad Gias Uddin.

During the operation, a total of 66 people were rescued, 61 of whom were Rohingyas and five Bangladeshi nationals.
Among the total rescued persons, 18 are males, 11 are females and 37 are children, said Gias Uddin.

He said acting on a tip off, a team of police conducted drive at a house of Abdul Alim at Baharchara Union hill area of Teknaf and rescued the Rohingyas early hours of today.

Police also seized 4 rounds of bullets and two locally made weapons from their possession.
A case was filed with police station concerned in this connection.    —BSS
