The investigation into ruling party MP Manzurul Islam Liton killing case is focusing on five things---a planned murder by Neo-JMB or another militant group, Jamaat attack, political rivalry, family foes, and the recently held Zila Parishad election.
Liton, lawmaker from Gaibandha-1 constituency, was shot point blank by a gang at his village home at Masterpara in Sundarbans upazila on Saturday (December 31). He was rushed to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.
According to the witnesses, the killers were wearing black pants, jackets and shoes and one of them had French-cut beard. Police could not unearth clue to the murder as of Saturday.
Ashraful Islam, Superintendent of Police (SP) of Gaibandha, said police have so far detained 32 suspects from different places of Gaibandha district.
Five youths took part in the killing mission. Two of them entered the living room while the rest three were staying outside the house.
Several police teams are conducting drives to arrest the killers, the SP said.
Atiar Rahman, officre-in-charge of Sundarganj Police Station said: "MP Liton's younger sister Fahmida Bulbul Kakoli filed the case with Sundarganj Police Station around 10:00pm on Sunday.
Liton was laid to rest at his family graveyard at Shahbaz under Bamondanga Union of Sundarganj around 4:40pm on Monday. Earlier on the day, the second namaz-e-janaza for Liton was held at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad.
After the janaza, President's Military Secretary Major General Md Sarwar Hossain placed a wreath on the coffin draped with national flag on behalf of the head of the state.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina then placed a wreath on the coffin and stood in solemn silence there for sometime as a mark of respect to the memory of Liton, also the president of Sundarganj upazila Awami League
Flanked by senior party leaders, Hasina then placed another wreath on behalf of the Awami League.
Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Deputy Speaker Md Fazle Rabbi Mian and Chief Whip ASM Feroz also placed wreaths on the coffin.
Railways Minister Majibul Haque, Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan, Land Minister Shamsur Rahman Sharif, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam, Chief Whip ASM Feroz, other whips, parliament members, political leaders and senior officials of the Prime Minister's Office and Jatiya Sangsad joined the namaz-e-janaza.
AL Presidium Members Engineer Mosharraf Hossain, Syed Ashraful Islam and Dr Abdur Razzak, General Secretary Obaidul Quader, joint secretaries Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif and Jahangir Kabir Nanak, AL organizing secretaries Ahmad Hossain and Enamul Haque Shamim also attended the janza.
A munajat was offered seeking eternal peace of the departed soul of the slain AL lawmaker. Pesh Imam of Jatiya Sangsad Mosque Maulana Nurul Islam conducted the munajat.
Awami League has pointed the finger at Jamaat-e-Islami, which has denied the allegation, saying the ruling party is putting the blame on it to hide the real killers.
Home Minister Kamal said, "We are seeing whether it was their plan to create a situation in the area. We are keeping an eye on everything."
