B'baria-5 : BNP nominee Mannan relies on loans, rebel Nazmul shows wealth

NABINAGAR, BRAHMANBARIA, Jan 3: Eleven candidates have submitted nomination papers in Brahmanbaria-5 (Nabinagar) for the upcoming 13th Jatiya Sangsad election. 

Among them, the spotlight is on BNP-nominated candidate and Upazila BNP President Md Abdul Mannan, and independent candidate Kazi Nazmul Hossain, who is also the District BNP's Economic Affairs Secretary but was denied party nomination.

Affidavit records show that Nazmul Hossain is financially stronger than Abdul Mannan. Nazmul, a businessman, declared Tk 7.98 crore in cash, Tk 6,115 in bank deposits, and savings certificates worth Tk 25 lakh. His wife, Anisa Akbar, holds Tk 23.96 lakh in bank deposits. Nazmul owns 53 bhori of gold, while his wife has 32 bhori. He drives a car valued at Tk 33 lakh and plans to spend Tk 40 lakh from his own income on election expenses. He also owns a 43 percent share in a six-storey building in Dhaka and jointly owns agricultural land in Nabinagar worth Tk 84 lakh. His tax returns show assets of Tk 11 crore, while his wife owns Tk 1 crore.

In contrast, BNP candidate Abdul Mannan, a lawyer by profession, reported an annual income of Tk 1.85 lakh from legal practice and Tk 2.70 lakh from rents. His son, Reza-e-Rabbi, earns Tk 6.66 lakh annually from employment. Mannan declared Tk 31.56 lakh in cash and owns 30 bhori of gold, along with 10 decimals and three kathas of non-agricultural land and a 10-decimal homestead. His tax returns show assets worth Tk 42 lakh. With limited resources, Mannan plans to finance his campaign partly through loans and contributions from relatives, including Tk 10 lakh from his brother-in-law, Tk 3 lakh from his nephew, and Tk 8 lakh from other family members.

Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Abdul Baten, also a lawyer, reported Tk 6.70 lakh annual income from practice and Tk 2.70 lakh from rents. His wife, Nasima Yasmin, a teacher, earns Tk 11.74 lakh annually. Baten owns a car worth Tk 11 lakh, Tk 1.20 lakh in cash, and declared assets of Tk 33 lakh. He plans to spend Tk 20 lakh in the election, including Tk 10 lakh from Jamaat, Tk 5 lakh from Dr Hanif, and Tk 5 lakh from his own income.

Jatiya Party candidate Mohammad Kamrul Islam reported Tk 4 lakh annual income from business and assets worth Tk 15 lakh. Islami Andolan candidate Nazrul Islam Nazu declared Tk 2.30 lakh annual income from agriculture and Tk 10 lakh from business, along with savings certificates worth Tk 2 crore. His tax returns show assets of Tk 4.15 crore.
Khelafat Majlis candidate Amjad Hossain, an Islamic speaker, declared Tk 29 lakh in cash.
