The Jagannath University Central Students' Union (JnUCSU) election has taken a dramatic turn as candidates backed by Islami Chhatra Shibir took the lead in the three top posts Vice President (VP), General Secretary (GS), and Assistant General Secretary (AGS), following the announcement of results from 31 polling centers out of 39 centres.
According to the Election Commission, candidates of the Shibir-backed "Adomyo Jabiyan Oikya" panel moved ahead after the latest round of vote counting. Earlier, after results from the first 20 centers, Chhatra Dal-backed VP candidate AKM Rakib was leading. However, the inclusion of results from three additional centers reversed the trend, bringing a dramatic shift in the race.
The latest results from the Departments of Economics and department of History were announced on Wednesday at around 9 PM.
In the VP race, Shibir candidate Riazul Islam has secured 4,319 votes, while his closest rival, AKM Rakib of Chhatra Dal, has received 3,662 votes, leaving a margin of 657 votes.
For the GS post, Shibir panel candidate Abdul Alim Arif is leading with 4,333 votes, far ahead of Chhatra Dal candidate Khadijat-ul Kubra, who has obtained 1,745 votes.
Meanwhile, in the AGS race, Shibir candidate Masud Rana is ahead with 3,862 votes, followed by Chhatra Dal candidate Atikur Rahman Tanzil, who has secured 3,051 votes.
Despite Shibir's lead in the top three positions and most editorial posts, Chhatra Dal candidates remain ahead in the Library Secretary and Cultural Secretary posts. Several Chhatra Dal-backed candidates are also performing well in the executive member positions.
It is worth noting that vote counting in the JnUCSU election was suspended for several hours due to technical issues yesterday. Although counting later resumed using both manual and electronic methods, election officials were unable to complete the process in one phase.
After a five-hour pause, counting resumed again at around 12:45 am on Wednesday night. Results from 8 polling centers were still pending till filling of this report around 10:30pm.
