More than 100 workers of two garment factories in Gazipur's Tongi fell ill suddenly on Wednesday, prompting panic at the factories.

The affected workers, from two factories of Export Village Limited, were taken to nearby hospitals. Workers at factories located in Ma Tower and Alam Tower were reportedly the most affected.

Dr Nahid Sultana, Emergency Medical Officer at Tongi Government Hospital, said the workers showed symptoms of panic attacks, vomiting and respiratory problems.

"Most of the workers are now out of danger."

According to local sources, the workers had staged strikes on Monday and Tuesday over arrears of their November wages. Some reportedly fell ill on Wednesday during the demonstrations.

Tongi East Police Station OC Mehedi Hasan said that the factories were temporarily closed following the incident.
