A local leader of Jubo League died at Chattogram Central Jail on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Md Nurul Alam, 38, a resident of Dhemsha Union in Satkania Upazila of Chattogram. He was the joint convener of Dhemsha Union Unit of Jubo League.
It was known that a team of the Detective Branch of Police arrested Nurul Alam at around 12pm on Tuesday, and handed him over to Satkania Police Station (PS). Later on, he was produced before the court, and the court sent him to Chattogram Central Jail in the afternoon.
As all of a sudden he fell sick on Wednesday morning, the jail authorities took Nurul Alam to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
Senior Jail Superintendent of Chattogram Central Jail Md Iqbal Hossain confirmed the matter.
Meanwhile, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Satkania PS Jahangir Alam said that Nurul Alam was in the PS only for two and a half hours.
No incident occurred during that time that could have caused him to become ill while in police custody, the OC added.
