NARAYANGANJ, Jan 31: Ahead of the 13th parliamentary elections, BNP has expelled 26 leaders from Narayanganj-3 (Sonargaon-Siddhirganj) for allegedly defying party decisions and engaging in anti-party activities. Among those expelled are former state minister Professor Rezaul Karim and ex-MP Muhammad Giasuddin.

The first expulsion came on 30 December 2025 when Muhammad Giasuddin, a rebel candidate, was removed. Subsequently, Professor Rezaul Karim was expelled on 21 January, and several local youth leaders and committee members were expelled on 28 January.

On Thursday, BNP announced the expulsion of 20 more leaders from Sonargaon and Siddhirganj units, including Sonargaon Upazila BNP vice-president Bazlur Rahman, joint secretary Advocate Saddam Hossain, former acting general secretary Humayun Kabir Rafique, Siddhirganj Thana BNP president Majedul Islam, and several ward-level secretaries and presidents.

The decision was issued in four separate press releases signed by BNP senior joint secretary Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi. Narayanganj district BNP convener Professor Mamun Mahmud confirmed the move, citing violation of party directives.

Expelled leaders claimed they were ousted unjustly. Khondkar Abu Zafar, former Sonargaon Upazila BNP president, said he supported a qualified candidate over an ineligible one and was not perturbed by the expulsion. Meanwhile, Sonargaon Upazila Jubo Dal leader Shahidur Rahman Swapan said he had faced multiple arrests while serving the party and had now begun working for an independent candidate.
