Australia’s T20 World Cup campaign faced an unexpected setback as captain Mitchell Marsh was ruled out of the opening match against Ireland, forcing a late inclusion of veteran Steven Smith as cover.
Marsh suffered a groin injury during a training session, with scans revealing internal testicular bleeding.
Cricket Australia confirmed that the skipper is experiencing significant pain and restricted movement and will require rest and rehabilitation.
The news came just minutes before the toss in Colombo, despite Marsh speaking to the media earlier in the day.
Smith, who last played a T20 International in February 2024, will join the squad in Sri Lanka to acclimatise and be available if needed.
The former captain comes off a strong Big Bash League season, scoring 299 runs at an average of 59.8 for Sydney Sixers.
Australia’s squad is already dealing with injury challenges, with key players Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins unavailable and Tim David being carefully managed following a hamstring problem.
