BNP candidate Md Asaduzzaman has emerged victorious unofficially in Jhenaidah-1 constituency in 13th Jatiya Sangsad election, according to unofficial results.
His closest rival, Matiur Rahman of Jamaat-e-Islami, trailed significantly.
The returning officer’s unofficial tally showed Md. Asaduzzaman securing 171,598 votes, while Matiur Rahman received 55,577 votes.
Voters across the country enthusiastically exercised their franchise in a festive atmosphere, reclaiming their right to vote after 17 years.
Polling for both the parliamentary elections and referendum concluded at 4:30 PM on Thursday and the counting of votes is now underway.
Senior Election Commission Secretary Akhtar Ahmed reported that by 2 PM, 36,031 out of 42,651 polling centres nationwide had recorded a voter turnout of 47.91 percent, noting that participation had been somewhat lower earlier in the day.
Polling began at 7:30 AM on Thursday, with a total of 127,711,793 registered voters eligible to cast their ballots, including 64,825,361 men, 62,885,200 women, and 1,023 third-gender voters.
