Advocate Md Aminul Islam on Monday assumed office as chief prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), pledging to accelerate judicial proceedings and ensure justice in ongoing crimes against humanity cases.
Immediate past chief prosecutor Tajul Islam formally handed over charge to Aminul at the Chief Prosecutor's Office around 2:15pm. Prosecutors welcomed the new chief with flowers and exchanged greetings.
Earlier in the day, the government issued a gazette notification appointing Supreme Court lawyer Aminul as chief prosecutor under the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act, 1973. The notification stated that his appointment takes immediate effect, while the order appointing Tajul Islam has been cancelled.
Speaking to journalists at the tribunal premises after assuming office, Aminul said the pace of judicial proceedings would increase in line with the aspirations of those killed in the July Uprising.
"Criminals must receive the punishment they deserve," he said, assuring that no innocent person would face harassment. He added that he would continue the work of the previous prosecution team and apply his experience to manage the cases more efficiently.
