The government has instructed the authorities concerned, including police, to re-examine cases filed after the ouster of the Awami League government during the August 5, 2024 mass uprising, to ensure that innocent individuals are not harassed.

Home Adviser Salahuddin Ahmed made the announcement on Monday after a meeting at the Ministry of Home Affairs with senior officials and heads of law enforcement agencies.

He said police have been directed to scrutinize cases filed after August 5, as allegations emerged that some were initiated against businesspeople, journalists, and professionals without proper grounds. Law enforcement agencies will submit a report after review.

The adviser also warned that mob violence and highway blockades would not be tolerated, urging citizens to pursue demands through lawful means.

He announced that over 630 police personnel dismissed in 2006 would be reinstated and recruitment would be held to fill 2,701 vacant constable posts.

In addition, the 2009 BDR mutiny will be reinvestigated, and all firearm licences issued between 2009 and 2024 will be reviewed. Licences found to have been granted improperly will be cancelled.

Emphasising professionalism in law enforcement, he said political interference in police work would not be allowed and postings would be based on qualifications instead of a lottery system.
