Opposition leader and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has said that the situation created at Bangladesh Bank on Wednesday seems the 'formal beginning of mob culture' backed by the current government.
In a verified Facebook post on Thursday morning, the opposition leader said no one has the right to humiliate respected individuals such as the Governor of Bangladesh Bank and his adviser.
He warned that the country's economy is already in severe distress due to what he described as the grip of fascism, widespread corruption at all levels, extortion and syndicate activities.
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said, ''If such undesirable incidents continue at an institution as important as Bangladesh Bank, the remaining foundation of the country's economy will also collapse.''
The remarks follow a day of unprecedented tension on Wednesday, where Ahsan H Mansur left the central bank at noon amidst loud demonstrations. One of his advisors was also forced to vacate his office under pressure from agitated officials.
The opposition leader called on the government to stop these activities immediately if it intends to build a 'democratic and equitable' Bangladesh, insisting that key appointments must rely on merit rather than political loyalty.
