Three individuals, including Kurigram-2 lawmaker Dr Atikur Rahman Mujahid, narrowly escaped a major accident after a head-on collision between a truck and a microbus in Rangpur’s Kaunia upazila early Tuesday.

The incident occurred around 6:30 AM on the Rangpur highway near the Kaunia Bailey Bridge, while the MP was returning to Kurigram from Dhaka, police said.

According to law enforcement officials, the vehicle carrying the MP collided head-on with a speeding truck coming from the opposite direction. The impact caused the microbus to lose control and plunge into a roadside ditch, leaving it badly mangled.

Dr Mujahid sustained minor injuries, while his driver Abul Kalam Azad, 40 and personal assistant Ikram Hossain, 25, were seriously injured in the crash.

Locals, with assistance from police, rescued the injured and rushed them to Rangpur Medical College Hospital. The MP received primary treatment and is now reported to be stable at his residence.

Confirming the incident, MP’s personal official, Sajjad Hossain Yunus, said the lawmaker is out of danger, while the two injured are undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Confirming the incident, Kaunia Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Nazmul Haque said that the truck involved in the incident has been seized.

Further legal action will be taken after receiving formal complaint, added the OC.
