Former Chief Justice Khairul Haque has been shown arrested in two additional murder cases filed with Jatrabari and Adabar police stations in Dhaka.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate approved police petitions to show him arrested in the cases on Monday.

The cases relate to the killings of student Md Arif during clashes in Jatrabari on July 19, 2024 and garment worker Md Rubel, who was shot during a protest in Adabar on August 5, 2024.

Prosecutor argued that Haque is a named accused and should be shown arrested for the sake of investigation. Defense counsel opposed the petitions and sought bail, citing the accused’s age and prolonged detention.

The court said the hearing was limited to the arrest petitions and not bail and subsequently granted the applications.

Haque, 81, has been in custody since his arrest from his Dhanmondi residence on July 24 last year, despite securing bail in several earlier cases on March 5.
