At least 619 people were killed and 1,548 others injured in 616 road accidents across Bangladesh in March, according to a report by the Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity (BJKS).
The organization also reported that a total of 670 accidents occurred across road, rail, and waterways during the month, leaving 682 people dead and 1,796 injured.
Motorcycle accidents accounted for the highest number of casualties. A total of 237 people were killed and 197 injured in motorcycle-related incidents, representing 38.61 percent of the total fatalities in road accidents.
The data was disclosed in a statement signed by the organization's Secretary General, Mozammel Haque Chowdhury, on Saturday.
According to the report, the findings were compiled by monitoring accident reports published in national, regional, and online media outlets.
The highest number of road accidents was recorded in the Dhaka Division, where 160 accidents claimed 170 lives and injured 320 people. In contrast, the lowest number of accidents occurred in the Barishal Division, with 30 accidents resulting in 27 deaths and 122 injuries.
Among those affected were individuals from various professions and social groups, including: 9 members of law enforcement agencies, 157 drivers, 90 pedestrians, 17 transport workers, 68 students and 15 teachers, 78 women and 86 children, 4 journalists, 3 physicians, 3 engineers, 1 lawyer, and 1 freedom fighter, 13 political activists.
Among the dead were 5 police personnel, along with one member each from Ansar, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and the Fire Service.
Analysis shows that: 40.90% of accidents occurred on national highways, 30.03% on regional highways, 22.07% on feeder roads.
Additionally, 5.51% of total accidents took place in Dhaka metropolitan area, 0.48% in Chattogram, and 0.97% at railway crossings.
